Barton Simmons, Director of Scouting at 247Sports, has ranked the 25 greatest head coaches in the sport going into the upcoming 2020 regular season. LSU’s national championship season has helped head Ed Orgeron make a jump into the top five. Here are the top 10:
- Nick Saban (Alabama)
- Dabo Swinney (Clemson)
- Ed Orgeron (LSU)
- Kirby Smart (Georgia)
- Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma)
- James Franklin (Penn St)
- Ryan Day (Ohio St)
- Dan Mullen (Florida)
- Jimbo Fisher (Texas A&M)
- Brian Kelly (Notre Dame)
Simmons had this to say about the top two on his list:
“The final two coaches on this list are in their own stratosphere, a tier reserved for two future Hall of Famers who have dominated in the infancy of the College Football Playoff era.”
Many do feel that Ohio State’s Ryan Day could make a huge jump into the top five this year. This is because of the great first season that he had in Columbus and then there is the expectation that the Buckeyes will be vying for a national championship in 2020.
