Choosing Baseball Would Mean ‘Shedding a Tear or Two’ for Clemson Freshman QB Bubba Chandler

Bubba Chandler’s ascension up Major League Baseball draft boards has been a hot topic of conversation among Clemson fans in recent weeks.

The 2021 Clemson signee is projected to go in the first round of Sunday’s MLB Draft, potentially going as high as somewhere in the Top-10. That means Chandler is going to have a very tough decision to make.

Appearing on the MLBN on Thursday, Chandler said that he knows he’s at the best school in the country but in the end it is going to come down what he and his family thinks is best for him.

“What we’re talking about is just looking for the best opportunity and best fit for me,” Chandler said. “Where I’m at at Clemson is the best school in the country and I love every bit of it but I do have a tough decision coming up and I’m just going to let God lead the way and He’s never wrong and I’m just going to follow His plan.”

Chandler is one of those guys that can be described as the ultimate competitor. He just likes to compete. While he is known for his prowess on the baseball diamond and the football field, when asked which sport he was better at, Chandler wasn’t tipping his hand.

“In my mind it’s basketball,” Chandler joked. “I just like competing. Whether it’s golf, basketball, tennis, whatever, I’m going to go out there and compete my butt off and try to win.”

The hard throwing right-hander from Georgia was committed to play baseball for the Dawgs in Athens. However, as a quarterback prospect, he kind of flew under the radar for awhile before receiving an offer from Clemson last summer.

It was the offer the two-sport standout always wanted and he quickly decommitted from Georgia and committed to Clemson to play both football and baseball.

“Clemson was the school that I always wanted to play at,” Chandler said. “You see what they do on the field and what they do off the field. It’s just, no one comes close to it. Coach Dabo Swinney, he’s the best. What you see on TV is what you get in person. He’s been great to our family and I love him to death.”

If things go according to plan and Chandler does hear his name called in the first round on Sunday night, he is faced with choosing between being a quarterback at Clemson or signing for potentially millions of dollars to begin his professional baseball career.

For some, that decision might be easy. For Chandler, it will be anything but.

“If I do choose to play baseball, I’ll probably shed a tear or two, but all the guys up here are great and on my side with whatever I do.”
