Monte Lee Attempting to Sell Bubba Chandler, Will Taylor on ‘Clemson Experience’

Much of the talk surrounding Will Taylor and Bubba Chandler has centered around what Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football team stand to potentially lose with both of the incoming freshman being projected as first-round MLB Draft picks.

However, Monte Lee and the Clemson baseball program also stand to lose two big-time players.

Chandler is a big, hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher, with a fastball that is topping out in the upper 90’s. Taylor is an exceptional outfielder that handles the bat extremely well.

During his season wrap-up session with the media on Monday, Lee said he has been in regular contact with each player, as well as the families.

“I am actively communicating with both of those guys and their families and meeting with them face-to-face over the course of this week,” Lee said on Monday. “What’s the right move for them is going to be a family decision.”

Lee said he is attempting to sell both of the multi-sport standouts on the fact that the college experience, in particularly when attending a school like Clemson, is something that is unique and only comes around once in a lifetime.

“What we try to do, we try to share with them the benefits of the Clemson experience,” Lee said. “I mean I don’t know if you can have a better experience than going to school at a school like Clemson, playing in the best football program in the country with Clemson football. And getting a chance to do both is a very unique situation, where you can play football and baseball at Clemson, I don’t know that there is a price tag on that type of experience. So that’s our biggest message to them.”

Being drafted in the first round typically means seven-figure signing bonuses and while Lee would love to have both in the Clemson dugout in 2021, he’s well aware of the tough decision that lies ahead for each of the young players.

“Those guys have a very tough decision to make when you are garnering first-round-type opportunities in the baseball draft,” Lee said. “Trying to make a decision as to what’s best for your future. But the biggest thing that we’re doing is trying to show them just how great the experience is here at Clemson and what benefits it can provide for them.”
