After a brutal start to the season, I seemed to gain some traction picking games down the stretch, hitting on my last seven picks. After getting in on the action a little later, Freddie also found his stride and hit on his last seven picks.
With all the cancelations it was getting harder to pick games, so we stopped after Week 14 and decided we would pick back up during the bowl season.
CJ: 27-18 (60%)
Freddie: 21-13 (61%)
Now it’s time to see how we fare in the postseason.
Cotton Bowl: #7 Florida vs #6 Oklahoma (-3.5)
CJ: Two teams with explosive offenses and no defense. However, as good as the Gators offense has been behind the leadership of Kyle Trask, opt-outs have hit this Florida team ahead of this game. Not having Kyle Pitts is a big loss and as well as Oklahoma is playing that might just be enough to put them over the top. Not to mention, this isn’t a playoff game so Oklahoma isn’t nearly likely to choke….. Oklahoma -3.5
Freddie: On paper this matchup looked really good when the selections were made. Opt outs have played a huge part in the 2020 season. Both in the regular season and for bowl games. Many feel that no individual opt out is bigger for a team than tight end Kyle Pitts. Pitts, in just eight games, had 770 yards receiving and averaged almost 100 yards per game, 18 yards per catch, and 12 touchdowns. Due to this along with other opt outs I expect the Gators to be less potent on offense and the Sooners to take this one…..Oklahoma -3.5
Peach Bowl: #9 Georgia (-7.5) vs #8 Cincinnati
CJ: Since JT Daniels has taken over at quarterback, this has been a different Georgia offense. And let’s be real, this Cincinnati team just does not have the talent to measure up. Unless the Dawgs just don’t show up, Georgia rolls….. Georgia -7.5
Freddie: I expect the Bearcats to keep it close but feel the Bulldogs will score enough in the second half to give themselves some breathing room. Cincinnati will try to press but won’t be able to come through in the end….. #9 Georgia -7.5
Citrus Bowl: Auburn (-3.5) vs Northwestern
CJ: Lots of upheaval going on at Auburn at the moment. A lot of opt outs including running back Tank Bigsby. This is a solid Northwestern team, not great, but solid….. Northwestern +3.5
Freddie: This is another one of those games that is going to be hard to decide on with all of the opt outs and coaching changes coming in. Keep in mind that earlier in the season, ESPN analyst Joey Galloway, compared the Wildcats’ athleticism to Rece Davis, a 55-year old ESPN host, so don’t expect much in the form of offensive firepower from Northwestern. While Auburn is in the middle of transitioning to their new coach and staff I still expect them to come out and have enough firepower to get the win….. Auburn -3.5
Rose Bowl (Arlington) #4 Notre Dame vs #1 Alabama (-19.5)
CJ: I have struggled with this one. I fully believe that this Notre Dame team is different. They are elite along the lines of scrimmage, without question. Where they are lacking is at the skill spots though and I just don’t see any scenario in which they can keep up with this Alabama offense. It’s closer than most think but the Tide will eventually pull away an cover the number….. Alabama -19.5
Freddie: Many expect this one to be interesting up until kickoff but I would caution those that feel this way. Why? Because there’s about as little pressure as possible on the Irish. All the pressure is on the Tide’s side of the field. Notre Dame is hearing constantly how they are not supposed to win this game and how it’s not even going to be close. Keep in mind that the Irish are a lot better than they looked in their 34-10 beatdown to No. 2 Clemson. They have the lines, the running game, and a veteran QB in Ian Book who still remembers his last semifinal game and won’t get rattled in the big game spotlight. Don’t misunderstand me. I do expect Alabama to pull away in the second half and win this game, but I just expect it to be closer than many others would think….. Notre Dame +19.5
Sugar Bowl: #2 Clemson (-7.5) vs #3 Ohio State
CJ: Clemson is better than they were last year, and Ohio State is not. They have really taken a step back on the defensive side, particularly on the back end. Do not expect the thriller we got last season….. Clemson -7.5
Freddie: Ohio State comes into this game looking for revenge while Clemson is looking to send QB Trevor Lawrence, RB Travis Etienne, and this senior class out on a high note. For me, after you take all of the chatter, bulletin board material, and drama out of the equation I feel that the Tigers are the better team in this matchup top to bottom. I expect the Buckeyes to come out swinging and give Clemson their best punch but when the dust settles the Tigers will pull away and set themselves up for a return to the national championship game….. Clemson -7.5
