Boston College at Clemson: By the Numbers

The Tigers will host the Boston College Eagles in Death Valley at noon this Saturday on ABC. This will be the 29th overall meeting between these two teams. Clemson leads the series 18-9-2 overall and currently has a nine game winning streak in the series. The last meeting ended roughly for the Eagles as the Tigers beat them 56-7.

Boston College comes into this game under first year head coach Jeff Hafley, who was hired at the end of last season. Hafley was formerly the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State and was on staff last year when Clemson defeated them in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff after coming back from 16 points down.

Form the Ohio State perspective, the Fiesta Bowl was “controversial” and some expect this series to gain some new fireworks, despite the fact Hafley was only on staff for one season.

This year’s matchup also represents the 13th time that the Tigers and Eagles have played for the O’Rourke-McFadden Trophy. An award that the Boston College Gridiron Club began sponsoring in 2008. Clemson has won 11 of the 12 O’Rourke-McFadden Trophies given, which features a leather helmet replica of those used by Charlie O’Rourke of Boston College and Banks McFadden of Clemson when they competed against each other in the 1940 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. In addition to the trophy presentation, the Boston College Gridiron Club presents a replica leather helmet to the MVP of the winning school in the locker room.

The Eagles enter this matchup with a 4-2 record and a 48-27 win over Georgia Tech this past Saturday. Meanwhile the Tigers are coming off of a 47-21win over Syracuse. The Tigers opened as a 32 point favorite in this matchup but don’t expect this Boston College team to roll over and play dead. They, like Syracuse, will give Clemson everything they have so the Tigers will need to be ready to play.
