According to a report from Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, a large majority of FBS athletic directors favor expanding the College Football Playoff. In a survey done by Stadium, 88% of FBS AD’s would like to see the playoff expanded after the current deal expires in 2025.
The survey was an anonymous one sent out to all 130 FBS AD’s, with 112 responding. 72% are in favor of an eight team format, while 66% said the highest-ranked non-Power Five team should receive an automatic bid to an expanded playoff.
It would seem expansion is inevitable, although that doesn’t mean it is what is best for the sport. We already see to many blowouts in the semifinal round as it stands with just four teams. And even with the field expanded to eight, there will always be at least one school left out, who thought they should have been included.
