It’s D.J. Uiagalelei’s time to shine.
The big-armed quarterback from California takes over the Clemson offense with a ton of expectations upon his shoulders. After a good showing in his first scrimmage, in his first fall camp as the starting quarterback, head coach Dabo Swinney is more than satisfied with Uiagalelei’s progress.
In fact, Swinney said there was no one more dialed in than his new starting quarterback affectionately known as Big Cinco.
“He’s got a good command,” Swinney said. “There’s a few technical fundamental things that I think he needs to… sometimes he can get a little careless with, he needs to be a little more disciplined with, but D.J.s’, you know, nobody’s more locked in.”
During the Tigers scrimmage on Saturday, the coaching staff looked for ways to stress Uiagalelei to see how he would respond. However, with the dominating defensive front, Swinney said that wasn’t to difficult to do.
“This is a tough group you’re going against here,” Swinney said. “I mean this is live bullets flying out here now, I mean these dudes we got coming off this front, the blitzes that we got, the tight coverages that you see. I just wanted to see him with command of the offense.”
“It’s not always going to be perfect, but just manage the offense and stay within the system as he got it. How’s he gonna respond to a negative play. How is he going to handle momentum. You know, there’s gonna be some momentum changes in the scrimmage, how’s he gonna respond to that.”
All things considered, Swinney was more than pleased with how Uiagalelei performed in Saturday’s scrimmage.
“He was solid,” Swinney said. “I thought he had a couple throws he probably wishes he had back, didn’t turn it over. That was good to see. Took care of the ball. Had a couple of nice decisions in the run game.”
