D.J. Uiagalelei Excited About Weapons He Has at ‘Wide Receiver U’

D.J. Uiagalelei always knew he wanted to play on a college football team with an explosive offense filled with high-powered weapons.

Clemson’s new starting quarterback had become accustomed having dynamic receivers to throw the ball to at St Bosco. At the ACC Kickoff Uiagalelei said he didn’t want any drop off when he went off to college and joining the team known as “Wide Receiver U” seemed liked a perfect fit.

“I wanted to surround myself with great weapons,” Uiagalelei said. “I had great weapons in high school. I didn’t want to go through a drop-off. I didn’t want to go to a school without great receivers. Coming to Clemson means ‘Wide Receiver U.’ All the great receivers they’ve put out, the great receivers I have now, I’m definitely excited.”

Clemson heads into the 2021 season with arguably one of the deepest receiver groups in the country. However, three of the players they will be heavily relying on are all coming off of injury riddled seasons.

Justyn Ross missed all of 2020 recovering from surgery to repair a congenital condition in his spine and when healthy everyone knows what he is capable of doing on the field. EJ Williams and Ajou Ajou have both given fans glimpses of greatness.

Then there’s Frank Ladson Jr and Joseph Ngata, who both missed a majority of the season dealing with injuries too. In fact, both have dealt with nagging injuries throughout their first two seasons, leading many to question their durability. However, Uiagalelei warns that both of those guys are about to prove a lot of their critics wrong.

“I think we definitely do have the deepest receiver room in the country and the best receiving corps in the country by far,” Uiagalelei said. “We have some guys, like Joseph Ngata and Frank Ladson, they’ve played a little bit but because of injuries, they haven’t been on the field as much. They will this year and they’re definitely going to show a lot of people.”

The Tigers also signed three very talented freshman in the 2021 recruiting class. Dacari Collins, Beaux Collins, and speedy slot guy Troy Stellato give Clemson a wealth of depth and Uiagalelei is looking forward to reconnecting with his former high school teammate Beaux Collins on Saturday’s in the fall.

“I’ve thrown a lot of touchdowns to him, I’ve thrown a lot of yards to him,” Uiagalelei said. “I’m glad he’s here at Clemson.”
