The Deshaun Watson saga took another odd turn on Friday afternoon.
After going several weeks with little to no news coming out of either camp, Tony Buzbee, the lawyer representing the women that have filed civil suits against Watson, issued a statement via his Instagram account. Apparently, he took issue with “press folks” claiming both sides have gone quiet and had to speak up.
“There will not be a settlement, at least anytime soon,” attorney Tony Buzbee posted on social media. “The press folks say we’ve gone ‘quiet,’ but the truth is we made clear early on that we wouldn’t try these cases in the press …”
It seems a little odd after claiming that the case would not be tried in the media that Buzzbee felt the need to make a public statement.
Even more odd was the fact that he said that the case would not be settled “anytime soon.” If it can be settled later, why could it not be settled soon? Odd indeed. Or maybe they are trying to force the Texans quarterback’s hand seeing as training camp is on the horizon.
Rusty Hardin, the attorney representing Watson, recently said the NFL has yet to question the quarterback during its investigation into the matter.
A local legal analyst in the Houston area added that the closer training camp gets, the more leverage Buzbee has over the former Clemson quarterback’s camp.
“All litigation is about leveraging the other side. From the moment the first lawsuit dropped, Tony Buzbee has had a virtual monopoly on it. And every day that training camp gets a little closer, that leverage only becomes stronger,” said KPRC 2 Legal Analyst Brian Wice. “If the over/under on these lawsuits going away is 90 days, I’ll take the over.”
