After a dead period that lasted fifteen months, it was extremely nice to see the Clemson campus once again buzzing with potential high school prospects over the weekend.
Dabo Swinney held the Tigers’ first big recruiting event of the summer, the first-ever Elite Retreat, in which some of the teams top targets in the 2022 class were on hand, as well as the four players that have already committed in this class.
Don’t let the fact that no one committed fool you, the weekend event was a rousing success. And just because no one committed publicly, doesn’t mean no one committed at all. However, that’s a subject for another day, as most of you have probably already seen the speculation.
What did happen for sure, though, four players that were in attendance had projections put for them to Clemson. Even Steve Wiltfong, a recruiting guru for 247 Sports put in crystal ball projections for each of the following. Four-star safety Toriano Pride, four-star safety Sherrod Covill, four-star DE DJ Wesolak and five-star safety Keon Sabb.
Wiltfong is correct on more than 90% of his crystal balls, meaning when he puts one in, you can just about bank on it. In total, three were put in for Covill this weekend, while one each for Wesolak and Sabb. Pride had three put in towards the end of last week, with Wiltfong putting in one back in February. And that’s just at 247.
Clemson did add offensive lineman Mason Johnstone to the class. The in-state prospect committed to the Tigers as a preferred walk-on.
At 6-foot-7 he’s certainly got the frame to play OL, but will need to add weight. He’s more of a project guy with a pretty high ceiling.
