Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was a recent guest on Colin Cowherd’s show.
During the appearance the two covered a wide variety of topics, including Cowherd calling Clemson a fraud back during the 2016 College Football Playoff.
Something else the two talked about was who Swinney would consider the best coaches he’s ever faced, ones that might not get the recognition they deserve. The longtime Clemson head coach did not hesitate with a response.
“I would say Dave Clawson at Wake Forest,” Swinney said. “I think he’s a really good football coach and he’s done a great job there.”
Clawson has been the head coach at Wake Forest since the 2014 season, and during that time, the series between the fairly one-sided. Clawson is 0-7 all-time vs Swinney head-to-head, but the Deacs have played the Tigers tough at times over that stretch, despite having lost every game by at least 14 points.
Swinney was also quick to name two other coaches, including Syracuse’s Dino Babers. Everyone remembers the 2017 matchup when Syracuse shocked the world and upset the Tigers. The Orange came close to pulling off the feat once again in 2018, before a furious fourth quarter comeback by a Clemson team being quarterbacked by Chase Brice.
Swinney also referenced Bronco Mendenhall at Virginia, who led the Cavs to a Coastal Division title in 2019, before being dismantled by Swinney’s Tigers 62-17 in the ACC Championship Game.
“Dino (Babers) at Syracuse is another one, he’s always a handful,” Swinney said. “I think Bronco Mendenhall at Virginia is a really good football coach. That would probably be; I’m just thinking about guys we play every year. Those are some of the guys that jump out.”
