Clemson has never had a player win the Heisman Trophy. After Trevor Lawrence was drafted number-one overall in last weekend’s NFL Draft, it’s really the only accolade Dabo Swinney’s program has yet to achieve.
However, one NFL Draft analyst feels like the Tigers are about to check off that final box in the form of quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. The next starting quarterback from Clemson is already considered a favorite to win the award in 2021.
“D.J. Uiagalelei is my pick for Heisman 2021,” said PFF Draft’s Austin Gayle in a recent tweet.
Expectations are high after Uiagalelei shined in his two starts as a freshman last season. In his first career start, he led Clemson back from an 18-point deficit in a win over Boston College.
In his first career road start, he lit up the Notre Dame defense for more than 400 yards through the air. It was the most surrendered by the Fighting Irish in the storied history of the program.
For the season, Uiagalelei completed 67% of his passes, threw for 914 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. He also did not throw an interception in his 117 pass attempts.
