‘Laughable’ to Even Suggest Jaguars Should Draft Zach Wilson Instead of Trevor Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence, expected to go number one overall in the upcoming NFL Draft, had another ESPN analyst singing his praises on Wednesday.

Desmond Howard appeared on ESPN’s morning show Get Up on Wednesday and he had some interesting things to say about former the former Clemson Tiger.

NBC Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms commented earlier this week that former Zach Wilson, out of BYU, is the best quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft and not Lawrence and Howard made it clear what he thought of the opinion.

“Well, it’s laughable, but like you said, everyone is entitled to their opinion,” Howard said. “You look at Trevor Lawrence, I was at Clemson’s football camp about two years ago with my sons and Trevor Lawrence just walked in there with a t-shirt on and shorts. You were just amazed at how big he actually is outside of his pads.”

Howard went on to talk about Wilson, how he is built, how he has held up throughout his college career, and just what sets Lawrence apart from him (and others) when it comes to being the number one overall pick by an NFL franchise.

“Like (former NFL GM) Mike (Tannenbaum) said… you look at Zach Wilson,” Howard said. “He’s a slender-built guy, he’s already been hurt. Don’t forget, this guy’s going to be the face of your franchise for hopefully 10 to 12 to 14 years.”

Howard then went on to discuss Lawrence’s ability to handle the pressure of playing on the big stage, the competition level that he has faced over his three years at Clemson and the fact that Wilson didn’t have that same level of competition at BYU.

“Trevor Lawrence has been the face of Clemson football, if not college football, for at least two years,” Howard said. “So he’s used to that type of pressure. He’s making all throws. He’s built to last. I just don’t even see the comparison where you would risk all of that with a guy who didn’t play the competition level. Don’t forget, even though the ACC was weak, Trevor Lawrence played against the Alabama’s, Ohio State’s. He played against the LSU’s. He played against the best of the best and that’s what you want when you’re going to pick someone No. 1 overall.”
