We have an extra long wait for the ACC Championship this year. With Clemson and Notre Dame both having already locked up spots, the league decided there was no need for the teams to play any makeup games on December 12.
John Swofford and company have been waiting on this kind of matchup in the conference title game since the format was introduced for the 2005 season. The conference had hoped by adding Miami and Virginia Tech, along with already having Florida State, that this kind of matchup between highly ranked teams would be a common occurrence.
However, it just hasn’t worked the way they had envisioned. All three of those teams fell of dramatically, with Miami currently trying to work their way back up the ladder. In fact, it has been Clemson, under the guidance of Dabo Swinney, that has taken command of the league.
The Tigers are fixing to make a league record eighth appearance in the conference championship game and are looking to win it for a sixth straight year.
With Notre Dame on board for a season due to all the unusual circumstances, the league finally has that game they have been waiting for. Two top-five teams, squaring off in Charlotte, for all the marbles.
The Tigers will looking to avenge a double overtime loss in South Bend back in November when Clemson was severely undermanned. The Irish will be looking to prove that win was in fact not a fluke and that they are an elite team this season.
Here is a hype video to help get you ready.
