B.Y.O.E. Bring Your Own Energy

No one can forget Clemson’s memorable 24-22 win over Notre Dame in 2015 at Death Valley. It was in the middle of a monsoon, and after the game, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an emotional interview where he started the phrase “Bring Your Own Guts” (B.Y.O.G.)

Something many fans may not remember is that later that same season, Clemson traveled down to Miami to play a lopsided game against the Hurricanes, a game the Tigers won 58-0. Some may remember the stadium wasn’t anywhere near sold out.

Hard Rock Stadium (then called “Sun Life Stadium”) seats nearly 65,000 people, and the reported attendance was 45,000, but there wasn’t even that many there. Swinney reminded his players of something before that game. That it was a noon game, in the middle of October, hosted by a non-ranked team, inside a stadium that rarely sold out. For that game, the saying was “Bring Your Own Energy,” and boy did they.

Clemson’s offense scored on almost every possession, and committed only one turnover against a Miami defense that bragged about getting multiple turnovers every game. The Clemson defense forced three turnovers, allowed 146 total yards, and only six first downs the entire game.

Fast forward to October 2018, at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. The Tigers crushed Florida State 59-10. Clemson’s offense produced 524 yards, committed only one turnover (which was questionable by the way, as the ball was stripped from Will Swinney’s hands right as he caught it in the end zone, and the refs somehow didn’t see that he had possession of it), and had 25 first downs.

The Clemson defense had another memorable day, forcing two turnovers, allowing 247 yards and 15 first downs, and only 10 points. This game, normally played in front of a sold out crowd of 86,000 fans, reportedly had only just above 68,000, but again, it was far less than that.

There are plenty of other road games in Clemson’s past that have gone like this, but long story short, my reason behind this article, to remind fans of the times that Clemson football had to “Bring Their Own Energy” due to low fan attendance.

This season, at least to start out, Clemson will allow only 19,000 fans at home games. As for away games, that depends on school and state regulations of the home team. The team will most definitely have to do the same thing every game this season, home and away.

For those fortunate enough to be at games this season, keep being loud and proud, and EVERYONE, please wear masks and keep following guidelines! The more we do that, the sooner the restrictions will be lifted! God bless and Go Tigers!
