Wofford at Clemson
Memorial Stadium, Clemson SC
Nov 2, 4:00 PM (ACCN)
Wofford will make the quick trip down to Clemson this weekend to face the 4th ranked Tigers in what amounts to nothing more than a glorified exhibition. That isn’t a knock on the Terriers by any stretch, but an FCS team from the Southern Conference just can’t compete with a team the caliber of this Clemson team.
The Terriers are a very good FCS program, and after starting the season with consecutive losses to SC State and Samford, they have now won their last five games. Four of those five have been blowout wins, and the other was 35-34 win in overtime against UT-Chatanooga.
With Wofford, you aren’t going to see much effort put into the passing game. They only attempt about 13 passes per game. This is a team that runs the ball, and the do it in a spread option offense. This is the second best ground game in FCS, but like Boston College last week, this is a one dimensional offense. We saw what this Clemson defense can do against one dimensional offenses last weekend.
It is a quirky offense, but the Clemson LBs have to much athleticism for this rushing attack to have much success on the outside runs. The Tigers front four will be to much for the Terriers to handle when trying to run it between the tackles.
The goal this weekend will be to jump up on this team as quickly as possible, and get the starters out. Getting the backups in to play as many snaps as possible against this Wofford offense will provide them with a valuable learning experience.
If you are making the trip this weekend, don’t come expecting to see a whole lot of the starters. It shouldn’t take long for Trevor Lawrence and the Clemson offense to put enough points on the board to give themselves a comfortable cushion. The mass substitutions will start early in this one. Enjoy the festivities of Military Appreciation Day. Don’t forget to wear your purple, and enjoy watching the young guys getting some playing time.
