Former Clemson OF Seth Beer was traded today. A first round pick in last year’s MLB Draft by the Houston Astros, he was dealt as part of one of the bigger trades that took place ahead of the trade deadline this afternoon.
He was dealt to the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of a deal that brought pitcher Zack Grienke to the Astros. Beer was one of four prospects involved in the deal for the former Cy Young winner.
Beer was currently playing for the Astros AA team in Corpus Christi. Through 63 games the slugger was hitting .299 with 16 long balls and 52 RBI.
On the surface this appears like it could be a good move for Beer. With Arizona, the path to the bigs looks to be quicker than it would’ve with Houston, as the Astros have a crowded outfield currently.
Unless, of course, he’s destined for a DH role. The D’Backs are a National League team with no DH so he’ll have to prove his defense is worthy of a corner outfield spot at the MLB level.
