Clemson’s Biggest ‘Trap’ Game In 2022?

Each season, when the college football schedules start coming out, fans start combing them with a fine toothed comb.

After Clemson’s 10-3 season in 2021, many in the national media think the ACC is as wide open as its ever been in the coming season.

247 Sports’ Will Backus recently released a list of trap games for each ACC team, and the one he picked out for Clemson might surprise some fans.

Backus circled the rivalry matchup with South Carolina as the Tigers’ trap game, and while many might disagree, it’s hard to argue with his reasoning.

The Tigers draw their heated in-state rival after a three-game stretch that includes a road trip to Notre Dame and a home draw against a much-improved Miami. If things go as planned for Clemson, it could be looking ahead to the ACC Championship. South Carolina, meanwhile, has tons of momentum under coach Shane Beamer and might find its way inside the top 25 at some point next season with a stacked defense and an offense stocked with stars through the transfer portal. Since 2013, Clemson has beat South Carolina by more than one possession all but three times. Expect that to change this year, with the Gamecocks having a real shot at winning.”

Clemson has won seven straight over the Gamecocks, including last season’s 30-0 shutout in Williams Brice. The average margin of victory in those seven wins, a whopping 26 points.

However, it’s hard to envision a Dabo Swinney coached Clemson team ever overlooking the Gamecocks. No matter who is on the schedule the previous week or two. Especially in a season in which the Tigers will welcome its rival back to Death Valley for the first time since 2018 and with Clemson looking for a series record eighth straight win in the annual rivalry matchup.
