SC State at Clemson: Preview and Prediction

Poor SC State. As the late, great Dusty Rhodes used to say, there’s going to be some hard times, not to mention some pain, blues and agony being felt in Death Valley on Saturday.

Let’s face it, this Clemson team is going to be looking to make a statement on Saturday and SC State is unfortunately the sacrificial lamb. Dabo Swinney should just go ahead and apologize to Buddy Pough in advance for what is about to happen.

D.J. Uiagalelei didn’t play well last week. Not that he got much help. The offensive line was putrid, the running game was nowhere to be found, and the play calling was, well let’s just say, it was head scratching.

There’s no need to do a deep dive into this game. Let’s just say this Clemson offense needs a confidence boost and they are fixing to get one. It should be fun to watch, seeing as SC State just gave up 42 points to Alabama A&M.

The biggest thing to keep an eye on is the offensive line. This is one opponent this group should dominate. Lyn-J Dixon, Kobe Pace and Will Shipley should easily have a combined 200 yards rushing in this game.

Another thing to keep an eye on will be the defense. Can they bring that same energy they had against Georgia to Death Valley on Saturday against an overmatched FCS team?

Brent Venables will ensure that happens. The offensive line will look good, and Uiagalelei will shine.

Sam Clemons: Last Sunday morning, miraculously, despite belief to the contrary, the sun did rise. It seems our football fortunes have been in a spiraling nosedive for Tiger fans this week. In playing the SC State Bulldogs, the Tigers will go a long way to find out exactly where things stand offensively. Ironically, this week’s outing, even playing a lesser opponent, might be the most important game of the season. Let’s hope the “new” season begins for The Tigers on Saturday.

Ted Jackson: Clemson will easily have their way with SC State, but I imagine you’ll see an emphasis on the Tigers trying to establish a run game. This will shorten the game a bit, and every player dressed, not injured, will likely see playing time.

Freddie Huth: Clemson comes into this one on a two game losing streak and having dropped a season opener for the first time in seven years. The bitter taste of defeat in this teams mouth is not a good thing for the South Carolina State Bulldogs. The Tigers will take all of their frustration out on the Bulldogs in the first half and the backups should see plenty of action. Heck, even the graduate assistants could get some action, if they want to.
