Part of the Clemson fan base is right on the edge of the cliff. Some have already gone off the ledge.
Clemson lost 10-3 in the season opener in Charlotte, and the Tigers’ offense, led by D.J. Uiagalelei turned in a listless performance. It was a performance that has some fans worried that the programs streak of playoff appearances will come to an end this season.
However, FOX college football analyst Joel Klatt thinks Clemson fans, and college football fans in general, need to take a deep breath, saying the Tigers aren’t done just yet.
“Clemson fans, you need to relax,” Klatt said. “Everybody around college football relax with the whole ‘Clemson is done’ takes. They’re not going anywhere.”
Klatt pointed out that there aren’t many teams capable of making the Clemson offense look as pedestrian as Georgia did last weekend.
“What teams in the country can do to Clemson what Georgia did to Clemson?” Klatt asked. “Maybe two? Maybe. Alabama and Georgia. I don’t see another defense that can do to DJ Uiagalelei what Georgia’s defense did to him.”
Klatt said what is getting overlooked in all of this is how Brent Venables defense performed, and that the game still came down to one play.
“Oh, and by the way, Clemson just held Georgia to three points offensively,” Klatt said. “It’s one mistake. DJ makes the mistake and JT (Daniels) doesn’t make the mistake. So JT Daniels didn’t make the mistake and they won the game. It’s that close.”
Klatt has the Tigers still ranked at No. 5 in his weekly rankings and maintains that the Tigers are still very likely to run through the ACC.
“That was a razor-thin margin and everybody’s like, ‘Oh Clemson, they’re going to have problems, they’re going to struggle'” Klatt said. “With who? Who in the ACC can do that to Clemson? Clemson is No. 5 and I think they’re just fine.”
