#FlashbackFriday: The Birth Of B.Y.O.G.

For this week’s #FlashbackFriday video we go back to the night that saw the sixth ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish come into Death Valley to take on the number 12 Clemson Tigers.

The game saw both teams scratch and claw the entire sixty minutes on a rain soaked field, due to Hurricane Joaquin. A game that came down to a stop by the Tigers with less than ten seconds left on an Irish two point conversion attempt that finally sealed 24-22 win for Clemson.

For Coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers, it was a program defining victory. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson was responsible for 177 total yards and 3 touchdowns in the victory, and while it won’t show up in the box score, played admirably considering the conditions.

Maybe even a more memorable part of that night was Swinney’s postgame interview on the field, directly following the win. It was on this night that one of Swinney’s more famous acronyms was born. B-Y-O-G….. B-ring Y-our O-wn G-uts.

“I told them, ‘We give you scholarships, we give you stipends, and meals, and a place to live. We give you nice uniforms. I can’t give you guts, and I can’t give you heart’. And tonight, it was BYOG: Bring your own guts!” – Dabo’s post game interview with ESPN

Many have tried to attack his statement through ridicule, while others have loved it. Either way, it summed up what turned into a benchmark win and moment for the Tigers. And Swinney let the world know that come rain, sleet, or snow, the Tigers were back, and here to stay.
