After the Tigers missed on two highly rated prospects (five star Caleb Williams and four star Christian Veilleux) Coach Brandon Streeter, OC Tony Elliott, and Dabo Swinney began to talk with Bubba Chandler out of Bogart, GA and Lucas Coley of San Antonio, TX, and one now has an offer.
Late Thursday night Clemson offered Bubba Chandler. He is a two sport star that is currently committed to Georgia’s baseball team. He’s had no Power 5 offers in football until this week when he got the word from Clemson that he’s next in their continued search for a quarterback in the 2021 class.
Chandler said the offer was a surprise,
“I had been working in the yard most of the day and I was tired. I went into my room and decided to lay down and take a nap and fell asleep. My phone went off and it was Coach Streeter texting me that Coach Swinney was going to call me. The ding woke me up.”
Dabo Swinney then make the FaceTime call a few minutes later.
“Well, it was surreal. Talking to Dabo and him saying the words, ‘Bubba Chandler you’re a baller and you now have a scholarship here’ were probably some of the coolest words I’ve ever heard. I will deeply consider being a Tiger. Being able to talk to him and get this kind of offer is something I have always dreamed of.”
Chandler regarding FaceTime call
Chandler currently has only a small number of offers. Those are Elon, Gardner Webb, Western Kentucky, Mercer, Troy, and Charlotte. Now with the football offer from Clemson Chandler plans to talk with baseball coach Monte Lee about the possibility of playing both sports if he decides to accept the scholarship from the Tigers.
As for his decision, Chandler stated… ”I would like to visit Clemson before a decision. I can’t give you an exact date but it should be summer.” He did say that his decision is now 50-50 between Clemson and Georgia.
As a junior he passed for 2098 yards, hitting on 75% of his passes, along with 27 touchdowns. Chandler also rushed for over 500 yards and 4 more touchdowns.
Chandler played in ten baseball games this season before it was canceled. The RHP was 2-0 with 16 strikeouts in 7 innings and as a shortstop was batting .435 with 2 home runs, 5 doubles, and 16 RBIs.
Don’t be surprised that Swinney and crew offered this young man just because no other P5 schools have. Swinney has made it known that he and his staff recruit players that fit and not always have those players been on everybody else’s radar. Hunter Renfrow, Grady Jarrett, and Vic Beasley are some examples of that.
